Big benefits in a small package
The human intestine contains many
bacteria, some of these are beneficial and some are not. Probiotics are
bacteria that exhibit beneficial effects for digestive health and immunity
when consumed. Lactobacillus johnsonii, for example, is a probiotic
bacteria that adheres strongly to the gut mucosa, competing with certain
pathogens that cause disease, thus preventing the inhabitation of
dangerous bacteria in the gastrointestinal system.
Deepening our understanding of probiotics
Nestlé is a leader in probiotic genomics.
Sequencing of the La1 genome by Nestlé Research Center scientists is a breakthrough
technology. Prior to this discovery, there was little knowledge regarding
probiotic function at the molecular level. Sequencing the entire probiotic
La1 genome provides researchers valuable insights into the symbiotic
relationship of humans and probiotic bacteria.
Pioneers in probiotics
Nestlé has pioneered the development of
probiotics and their use in dairy products. Nestlé LC1 yogurt, which
contains La1 probiotics, has documented health promoting results and is
part of a healthful, balanced diet.
